Call for PhD Studentships – University of Porto/Lisboa

Candidates for PhD Programs

Description: The research centers REQUIMTE and iMed.ULisboa are seeking for candidates to PhD grants to develop a research work under the listed scientific research topics (one candidate for topic). It is expected that candidates be highly motivated to pursue a four-year PhD working plan.  The candidates are expected to conduct their main research activities at the host institution (see below) but it is expected that they might spend short periods in other locations together with our research partners in order to consolidate their work and scientific skills (see below). All topics involve the strong development of skills in chemometrics (multivariate data analysis), quality-by-design (QbD) and process analytical technology (PAT) concepts and have an industrial orientation (involving working with industrial partners).

Topics:

A) “High-throughput monitoring, process optimization and characterization of functionalized polymeric nanoparticles for cancer therapy”

Host Institution: Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, Partners location: Austin/USA, Tel Aviv/Israe

B) “Synthesis and characterization of pharmaceutical cocrystals/Formulation of cocrystals-based drug products for modified-release drug delivery”

Host Institution: Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, Partners location: Lisbon, Imperatriz/Brazil

C) “Modelling and monitoring of systems for the continuous production of drug products towards real-time release testing”

Host Institution: Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, Partners location: Porto, Kuopio/Finland, Ghent/Belgium

Scientific supervision: The PhD programs will be supervised by Dr. João Almeida Lopes (iMed.ULIsboa, Faculty of Pharmacy, University. of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal) and by Dr. Mafalda Sarraguça (REQUIMTE, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal)

Requirements: BSc+Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related areas with a minimal overall classification of 15. The selected candidates will apply for a PhD grant in Portugal (FCT/MCTES) in July 2016.

Application dead-line: Applicants should send a short motivation letter (one paragraph) and Curriculum Vitae to jlopes@ff.ulisboa.pt until the 15th of June 2016. Please include in your letter the topic of your major interest (A, B or C).

EuPAT 7

May 18-19, 2015, 2014, in Graz, Austria

The seventh pan-European Science Conference on QbD and PAT Sciences brings together pharmaceutical scientists and engineers from industry, academia and regulatory agencies to discuss recent developments and future trends in the field of pharmaceutical product and process development. The focus of the 7th EuPAT Conference will be on future and emerging trends in the pharmaceutical sector, including continuous manufacturing; the development and supply of personalised medicines and the design and manufacture of nano-structured, pharmaceutical products. Regulatory uncertainties, technical challenges and barriers to adoption, which exist in each of these focus areas, will be explored and debated in detail.
