Short CV

João Almeida Lopes (JAL) graduated in Chemical Engineering (biotechnology branch) in 1997 at Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon). In 2001, in the same institution, he completed the PhD in Chemical Engineering in the area of chemometrics applied to the pharmaceutical industry. This PhD Thesis has been awarded with the CUF prize (for the best chemical engineering Thesis of the period 1999-2001). In 2004, during a PostDoc research period, JAL was awarded with the first prize in the entrepreneurship contest Bioempreendedor where infrared spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics was proposed for rapid and cost effective identification of human bacteria pathogens. JAL joined the Associated Laboratory REQUIMTE and University of Porto in 2006 as Assistant Researcher in chemometrics and process spectroscopy. In 2006, he started WORLDMETRICS, a company for industrial implementation of advanced process analytical technology (PAT) solutions. Since 2014, JAL is Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon. JAL research activities are based on chemometrics and vibrational spectroscopy in the pharmaceutical and agrofood fields. He started the Chemometrics & Process Analytical Technology unit of the GABAI/University of Porto research centre. This research unit is focused on Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Quality-by-Design approaches for exact, life and environmental sciences. He’s member of the steering committee of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences Quality-by-Design/PAT network since 2010. He coordinated and participated in more than 35 funded projects of different topologies most in collaboration with industrial partners mainly primary and secondary pharmaceutical, oil refining, agrofood, dairy and brewing industries). He currently holds 5 R&D contracts with pharmaceutical and agrofood companies. He supervised several undergraduate students, PhD students and Postdoc researchers. He published 64 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals and book chapters. He lectured several invited communications in international conferences and symposia, co-authored 65 oral communications and 96 poster communications in international scientific conferences. JAL is a member founder ofthe National Science and Technology Researchers Association and President in 2013/2014.

Research Topics

Current research activity is focused on the development and application of chemometrics and vibrational spectroscopy  (near-infrared, mid-infrared) in the context of green-chemistry (non-destructive, non-invasive, reagent-free): 1) Chemometrics modelling; 2) Bioreactors monitoring and control, 3) pharmaceutical processes and pharmaceutical quality control, 4) analytical methods development and optimization, 5) Food quality control; 6) bacteria high-throughput identification; 7) Conservation&restauration studies
